Background:
Cyclone Freddy, one of the longest-lasting cyclones on record, recently devastated parts of southeast Africa. After impacting Madagascar and Mozambique in multiple waves, it swept through Malawi, causing intense flooding through the Southern region. By current estimates over 600 lives have been lost in Madagascar, Mozambique and Malawi, with scores more reported missing. In the towns of Thyolo, Mulanje and Chiladzulu in Malawi’s South Region, where Nascent implements the USDA McGovern-Dole Food For Education program in over 40 schools, the destruction was significant. Across these schools, 5 learners lost their lives to the cyclone and four others are reported missing.
