Cyclone Freddy which first made landfall in Southeastern Africa on February 6, 2023 may be the longest lasting cyclone on record. After first devastating Madagascar and Mozambique in multiple waves, it swept through Malawi, causing intense flooding through the Southern region. By some estimates over 300 lives were lost in Madagascar, Mozambique and Malawi, with scores more reported missing. In the towns of Thyolo, Mulanje and Chiladzulu in Malawi’s South Region, where Nascent implements the USDA McGovern-Dole Food For Education program in over 40 schools, the destruction was significant. Across these schools, 5 learners lost their lives to the cyclone and four others were reported missing.
